Film Treatment

From my synopsis I have developed my ideas to come up with the film treatment which is waht I will use to help decide on the scenes.
A group of four young teenagers are enjoying their evening and have been drinking. They head off into the woods and start talking about ghost stories and dares which they will carry out. Matthew disappears from the group when he says he is going for a wee and as he turns away he puts his hood up and has a phone conversation. Whilst Matthew is gone, the three characters come across a crime scene and flee. The audience does not see the crime scene but the group look horrified. Heidi and Jason turn, begin to run, Felix looks at the crime scene and goes to help the person in danger but Heidi runs back and grabs her by the arm and drags her away. (camera view of the criminals looking through the trees and bushes). When running they hear noises in the woods and stop to listen, they see a hooded figure moving about in the trees and Matthew comes out, they drag him with them and say they will explain when they get home they just have to leave the woods as quickly as possible.

Back home, the group are sitting round with few lights on, they tell Mathew what they see and begin to discuss the situation. Matthew suggests not telling anybody and keeping what they had seen a secret. Felix however, persisted to let somebody know as somebody’s life was in danger, and they should go back to help, she is full of regret and has been crying. The other two characters, Heidi and Jason do not want to say anything as they think they know who the figure was in the trees and do not want to say anything out of fear that the figure will come and get revenge. (A small amount of blood is on Matthews hand and Felix spots it, they look eye to eye and Matthew moves his hand out of sight.)

THE NEXT DAY - The crime scene is documented in the news and on the radio, the police are asking for any witnesses and any information which would help. (Show a newspaper clip and have a radio advert/news clip playing over it) We hear Matthew on the phone shouting and it becomes apparent that he had some involvement in the crime. Felix admits that she cannot stop thinking about what happened and that she should go to the police but Matthew shouts at her and she begins to cry. There is a loud knock and the police are at the front door, Matthew tries to take control and threatens the group to stay quiet.

(Black scene) The next scene is of the group at the police station and each member is interviewed separately. Matthew pleas that he has no connection and doesn’t know anything about the events of the previous night, Felix breaks down and begins to reveal what happens. Jason remains quiet and Heidi looks around her and is uncertain what to do and say.

The penultimate scene is of Felix being put into a cell and the door is closed with a thud. She bangs the door then slides down it crying and saying over and over that she is innocent.

Felix then gets let out of the police station as she is found to be innocent and expresses to the police, a connection between Matthew and the crime scene. There is now a warrant for Matthews arrest but he has gone missing. The scene ends with Matthew dressed in black clothing and looking rough appears at Felix’s front door of her house, he bangs on the door loudly and impatiently and is holding a gun. The screen goes blank and the cast list roles. The film then ends with a scream and a loud gun shot then faint police sirens.

Distribution for my film poster

The options I have available to me to distribute my poster would be:
- To get it published in a film magazine.
- To get a large poster printed and advertise my film in a cinema.
- To upload the poster to Google images.
- Add a link for the poster to the film on Youtube.
- Social networking sites.

Enlarging on this:
To get it published in a film magazine.
A good option to distribute my film poster would be to puclish it in a film magazine (such as Empire of Total Film 50) as I will meet my inteded audience by doing so and will also be able to attract other audiences who do not tend to watch suspense films as these magazines cover a wide range of genres.

To get a large poster printed and advertise my film in a cinema.
The cinema would be a good place to advertise my film as it will reach a wide range. Although as my film is small scale, it would more likely to be featured in one local cinema rather than nationally. If I was to advertise the poster in the cinema, I would make an agreement with the cinema to have a special showing of my film.

To upload the poster to Google images.
If I was to upload the poster to Google images, I would be able to reach a mass audience which is good but then the audience would have to know exactly what they are looking for to be able to find it as I would not have the available finance to have it as a top search. To increase the likelihood of it getting views on Google images, I would need to include many tags.

Add a link for the poster to the film on Youtube.
An option for creating hype regarding my film would be to upload a teaser trailer to Youtube. Along with this, I could add a link to the description which takes the user to the poster which would help get it recogised. In this case, the poster would most likely to be uploaded to SlideShare to create the link.

Social Netwroking Sites
Another method of causing hype for my film would be to publish the poster on to a social networking site such as Facebook (with this I would also incluse a link to a teaser trailer). This would hopefully cause a "chaining effect" with people sharing and reposting the poster so their friends can see. Social networking sites are an effective way of creating hype and would mean that the film would be in high demand and get good viewing figures when it was released.

The net circulation per issue is 179,064.
The net circulartion is divided into the UK and republic of ireland which has a circulation of 105,589 and 16,617 for other countries.

The purchase price of a single Empire magazine is £3.99

Summary of research
From the research listed above, I have decided that I would want to distribute my article through a film magazine. The top choices for my magazines would be "Empire" (top choice) and "Total Film". This is because they have mass circulation which would allow thousands of people to view the article across the UK. Also, these are my top choices because I have used both of these magazines for my research and know that my article will fit in with the style of the magazines.

Distribution for my short film

The main contenders for the distribution of my film would be Channel 4, Film 4, Sky and BBC1 as these all would show a short film and often Film4 and Sky do competitions for short films.

Weekly viewing figures:
Sourced from: http://www.barb.co.uk/

22nd Nov - 28th Nov 2010

BBC:
BBC 1

- Average daily reach is 30,605,000 people, having a 53.4% share of the total TV viewing across all TV channels.

- Weekly reach is 49,237,000 people which is a 85.9% share of the total TV viewing for the week.

- The total share of the weekly viewing across the week is 20.1% for all TV channels.

BBC 2
- Average daily reach is 16,277,000 people, having a 28.4% share of the total TV viewing across all TV channels.

- Weekly reach is 37,817,000 people which is a 66% share of the total TV viewing for the week.

- The total share of the weekly viewing across the week is 6.8% for all TV channels.

BBc 3
- Average daily reach is 3,944,000 people, having a 6.9% share of the total TV viewing across all TV channels.

- Weekly reach is 16,614,000 people which is a 29% share of the total TV viewing for the week.

- The total share of the weekly viewing across the week is 1.3% for all TV channels.

This research suggests BBC would be a good place to show my short film because of the broad audience it would be able to reach. BBC is a public service broadcaster which means that are not primarily interested in the view figures they get, their main interest would be showing programs and films that are in the public interest.

Hovever, majority of the short films shown on the BBC are during the day so this would not be suitable for the broadcasting of my short film because of the "15" classification and the genre of thriller/ suspense.

Channel 4

- Average daily reach is 15,357,000 people, having a 26.8% share of the total TV viewing across all TV channels.

- Weekly reach is 38,924,000 people which is a 67.9% share of the total TV viewing for the week.

- The total share of the weekly viewing across the week is 6.3% for all TV channels.

Although Channel 4 does not get as high viewing figures as BBC it would be a good distributor for my short film because of the nature of the films it shows. Channel 4 shows films at night and often show films up to an "18" rating. Channel 4 would also be a good place to show my film as they do broadcast short films.

Film 4
Film4 would be a good place to show my film as the program soley show films which include short films. Furthermore, as Film4 do competitions for short film making, it would be a good to enter it into a competition as it would provide the potential to take film making further. Also, by submitting it to Film4, it is very likely to be broadcast.

FIVE

Five would be a suitable channel to broadcast my short film as majority of the top watched programmes for FIVE are films. I have looked on the FIVE website and cannot find any short films that have been broadcasted on the channel. If FIVE were to start broadcasting films, FIVE would become a suitable broadcaster.

Youtube

Youtube would be a good way of creating hype about my short film as I would be able to upload a teaser trailer to the film for free. By using Youtube, the audience is very wodespread and not restricted to the UK.

Summary:
From my findings of the possible distribution channels, the ideal distributer would be either Channel 4 or Film4 this is because they show many films and tend to show films that have up to an "18" classification which enables my "15" classified film to be aired without any problems. Furthermore, both of these programs show short films and have a widespread audience.

Research for poster

For my poster I have looked at other programs and films which have characters with two sides which would demonstrate the split between the normal, friendly nature of the character and the opposite evil side of the character when dragged into the gang.

I have found a poster of Dexter which is an inspiration for the photo that I will use for the poster I create.

Dexter poster:
http://tvshowdexter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/dexter-calender.jpg

This image is inspirational as the hoody over Dexter's head and the shading over his eyes and face helps portray the dark side of his character which is the effect that I want to create using Matthew.

Although that the image I have found is for a calendar, I believe that it would make an effective poster as the main focus is on the main character and there is little text and other items that do not take the focus off of the character. The colour scheme is also very relevant to the Dexter calendar as it compliments the plot and storyline in the series and the red glow around the image puts the focus on Dexter.

Another film poster that I have looked at is one for G.I. Joe
link: http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.iwatchstuff.com/2009/01/27/gi-joe-char-poster-3.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.iwatchstuff.com/2009/01/gi_joe_posters_using_classic_l.php&usg=__Ko8XLBBh3U31qmYDbUaX9nERWdI=&h=667&w=450&sz=51&hl=en&start=0&sig2=Z3GEuzsdjwZ4OIv1ZpHbQw&zoom=1&tbnid=KZmlS0Fdv3Vz-M:&tbnh=162&tbnw=109&ei=MoXJTYDBHIPVtAbg-q2PAw&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dfilm%2Bposter%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D834%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=335&page=1&ndsp=35&ved=1t:429,r:13,s:0&tx=79&ty=74

I believe this is a good poster as there is one photo which takes up the whole of the page which puts all the attention on to the figure in the poster. By having just one image on the page, all the focus is to the one image and the viewer does not need to try and work out whats happening in all of the other images included.

The colour scheme featured in this poster is good as it shows a contrast between the subject (the lady) which is a dark colour and the background colour which is a light colour. Next to the figure, is the film title which is on the right hand side of the page, going down the right side of the page. This is an unusual location for the title as when I have looked at the Google results the main location for the title was either at the top of the page or the bottom of the page. In this case however, the title works really well as it makes the best use of the space.

There are very few other items on the page which are logos of the distributor and screenplay etc. This part of the poster looks good but it would benefit having more information on such as a release date which would give the audience a greater understanding of the purpose of the poster (other than to just build hype and inform the audience of a new film).

What have I learnt from this task?
By doing this task, I have a greater understanding of the conventions of a poster and to see what works and what doesn't.

An advantage of creating a poster for this year, is that in AS media I created a magazine cover and a article so I already have knowledge of using the software and seeing what works and what doesn't work.

To improve my research for my article, I could look into more posters which would increase my knowledge of posters and in turn, improve the ideas I have towards my poster. The more amount of ideas I will have will help me to pick out all of the best bits of each idea and make my final product a very good product which will be completed to a high standard.

Research into magazine articles - film review

For this research task I have looked at several reviews from magazines and also from the Empire website to get an idea of the conventions of a film review and to see the typical layout of the page.

Empire
I have looked on the Empire website to look at recent reviews to help me create my own.

This is the link:
Film review for "Hanna"
http://www.empireonline.com/reviews/reviewcomplete.asp?FID=137215

The style of the Empire's review is that it mainly talks about the action within the film and making comparisons to other films that the director has produced as well as other films by other directors.

Empire starts off by giving a brief summary of the plot and then goes on to the review followed by the verdict and giving it a star rating.

I like the way that the review opens with the plot which immediately tells the reader about the film if they do not already know about it which is a feature I would like to include in my article as it immediately engages the film with the reader. I also like the way that in the "Review" section of the review, Empire has focused on explaining the character.

An aspect of the review that I do not like, is the section named "Review" as the main focus is of the story line and the action involved which is just amplification of the plot. Despite, Empire giving the film four stars, they do not critise the film enough and only include one paragraph (7th out of 8th paragraph) about how the camera shots fit the purpose and amply the subject matter.

Overall, I believe that it is a shame that the plot is the main focus of the review and that it would become a better review if more of the focus was on how the film was filmed and any improvements that could be made.

Layout
- The page is divided into three sections: Plot, Review and Verdict.
- The page contains a box with facts about the film in.
- The page contains one image of the main character.

Total Film 50
I have also looked at the "Total Film 50" magazine (issue 150, Date January 2009) to get inspiration as to how the articles are layed out and what features articles they have written include.

- On each of the reviews featured in the opening line of the text is the date that the film will be out. This is a good point to include as it is important to let the reader know when the film will be released.

Slumdog Millionaire
I have looked at the review for Slumdog Millionaire which got a four star review. The text begins with the release date for the film followed by a question which draws the reader into the review. The review then goes on to the explaining the plot and comparing it to other films. The review then ends by summing up the genre of the film and has a final paragraph named "In short" which summarises the opinion of the person that had written the review.

Summary:
- Each of the reviews has a box which states the raw facts of the film which is a convention I would like to follow.

- Each review has a star rating beneath the title.

- Underneath the title of the film reviewed, there is a tag line.

- The review is not critical towards the film which is a feature I would expect to see as the film only got a four star rating.

Layout
- This review is not a feature review and covers half an A4 page.
- The review shows the title, one picture, the rating of the film and a tag line.
- There is a box which contains facts about the film.
- The review is followed by the name of the person reviewing the film.

DVD and Blu-ray review
I have also looked at the "DVD and Blu-ray review" magazine (issue 148, December 2010 ) to get a better understanding of how a different magazine writes their reviews.

Toy Story 3
This review is the best review I have read so far as its main focus is not on the plot. The review mentions the history behind the film and talks about the plot but does not give a lot of attention to the individual events that make up the plot which I believe is important as it doesn't spoil the film for the reader. The review also critsises the film against the previous ones and also compares the technology (the quality of picture). The review then ends with the "Final word" which sums up the review.

Layout
The page is laid out with the title and the star rating of the film. The double page spread also contains many brightly coloured pictures which is very appealing.

Evaluation of task
Although the film reviews that I have looked at have not been of the same genre as my film, the conventions of the reviews will be the same. An improvement to the research of articles would be to look into a greater selection of reviews and look at films that have a similar genre to the film I will be making.

What have I learnt from this and what I would want to include in my own article?
By looking at these reviews, I have got an idea of how to structure the article ie starting with a summary of the plot, followed by the review then the verdict at the end to sum up the review which is a convention (seen in Empire and Total Film 50) that I would like to include in my own article. I also like that the website contains a box on the left hand side with the film details in which is good as it gives raw facts at just a glance (such as Directors name, running time, the cast, the certificate, the screenplay and the distributor - list found in Total Film 50).

I have also decided that I would like to focus more on how the film was made rather than the storyline within it. By not going in depth into the plot, I believe I would not be revealing too much information the reader who would want to go and see the film as I would not want to spoil it for them.

Target audience for each product

Film

My target audience for this film would be for teenagers and older because of the genre of the film. Although you do not see the crime scene, the atmosphere crteated would not be suited to the younger viewer. This is why I have given the film a "15" classification which means nobody younger than 15 is allowed to either watch or purchase the film.

I have posted a forum topic on the college website asking about peoples favourite films and film genres which will give me an idea on the number of poeple who are interested in horror/ suspense films. Although the core audience of the forum will be teenagers between 14 and 19, the forum is also avaliable to teachers and the mature students which should allow a broader view of my target audience.

These are the results:

Poster
The audience for my poster will be the target audience for the film. This is because, the target age group is above 15 years which will mean that the people will be independant and will be able to make their own minds up about watching the film - unlike a film for young children, the target audience for the film would be parents.

Specifically, my target audience for the poster will be people who enjoy suspense/ thriller films as this is the intended genre for the film. However, if my poster was to be featured in a cinema or in a magazine, a larger audience will be addressed including people who do not enjoy suspense films.

Article
The target audience for my article will be general film magazine readers. This is because not all of the people in my target audience for the film will read film magazines on a regular basis. This will mean that the main audience for the film would not be addressed by distributing the article in a film magazine.

Specifically, my target audience for the article will be people who enjoy suspense/ thriller films as this is the intended genre for the film. However, if my article was to be published in an magazine, it will reach a much larger audience which will include people who do not enjoy suspense films. However, as the audience are likely to keen on watching many films, there is potential to get a greater audience of people. This is because people who do not necessarily watch many suspense films may have enjoyed the article and have been intruiged by the film, they may decide to watch it.

Ofcom

http://www.ofcom.org.uk/

Ofcom in the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries which means that whilst the ensure competition can thrive, they make sure that the people in the UK get the best from their communications and are protected.

Ofcom deals with:
- radio broadcasting
- TV broadcast

The TV broadcast licensing is the only aspect of Ofcom that will apply to my production. If I had chosen to have a radio advertisment for one of my ancillary products, the radio broadcasting license would also apply.

Ofcom states that nothing can be overly offensive and could encourage criminal acts. This will affect my film as the plot is based on gang crime and is likely to cause offence if the charcacters involved in the attack and at the end of the film when the audience hears a gunshot which suggests that Matthew has shot and potentially killed Felix. I am intentionally going to add a sound clip of police sirens to the end of the film to ensure that the audience who see the film would not be influences by believing they would be able to get away with a similar crime.

Advertising Standards Authority (ASA)

http://www.asa.org.uk/

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is the UK's independent regulator of advertising across all media, including TV, internet, sales promotions and direct marketing. The ASA's role is to ensure adverts are legal, decent, honest and truthful by applying the Advertising Codes.
An aim at the ASA is to ensure that consumers do not just enjoy the ads they see, but they can trust them too by enforcing advertising codes written by the Committee of Advertising Practise.

The ASA cover the following advertising:
- Magazine and newspaper advertisements
- Radio and TV commercials (not programmes or programme sponsorship)
- Television Shopping Channels
- Posters on legitimate poster sites (not fly posters)
- Leaflets and brochures
- Cinema commercials
- Direct mail
- Door drops and circulars
- Advertisements on the Internet, including banner and display ads and paid-for (sponsored) search (not claims on companies’ own websites)
- Commercial e-mail and SMS text message ads
- Ads on CD ROMs, DVD and video, and faxes
- We regulate sales promotions, such as special offers, prize draws and competitions wherever they appear.

The ASA work alongside Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) and Broadcasting Committee of Advertising Practice (BCAP) to help deliver a comprehensive regulatory approach.

The main idea of ASA that will affect my film poster and magazine article will be the protection of children. A priority of ASA was to look into ads for horror films and their potential to scare children. ASA try to ensure children are not exposed to potentially harmful or inappropriate advertising that could cause physical, mental or moral harm.

Although my genre is primarily suspense there may be an element of horror in it so I need to ensure the publication of my poster and article will not be readily available for children, the classification of my film using the BBFC guidelines should hopefully restrict children viewing the film, poster and magazine article.

If I was to produce a advert to be broadcast on the TV I would have to make sure that the advert is not scheduled or placed in or around children’s programmes or in or around programmes likely to be seen by significant numbers of children which would be unlikely for the genre of thr film and its rating.

When creating my magazine article and my advertising poster I need to ensure that neither will be harmful or offensive by taking into consideration the generally excepted moral, social and cultural standards to avoid the risk of causing harm and serious or widespread offence.

Press Complaints Commission

http://www.pcc.org.uk/

Last year for my AS assignment I have looked at the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) to see what is and isnt allowed into a music magazine. Some of the areas will be compatible with the article that I will be writing for my film and also if my poster is featured in a magazine.

The PCC is an independent self-regulatory body which deals with complaints about the editorial content of newspapers and magazines (and their websites).

The code of practise areas are:
- Accuracy
- Oppurtunity to reply
- Privacy
- Harassment
- Intrusion into grief and shock
- Children
- Children in sex cases
- Hospitals
- Reporting crime
- Clandestine devices and subterfuge
- Victims of sex cases
- Discrimination
- Financial journalism
- Confidential sources
- Witness payments in criminal trials
- The public interest

From the activity I have learnt about the factor that have to be considered for published materials, what the editiors have to do and how these factors will affect my ancillary products. It is unlikey that any of the factors listed above will be relevant to my article except that I will need to make sure that the information provided is accurate. The magazine that the article/poster is in will have to make sure that their consumers have the right to reply by providing their contact details. If any complications do arise, it would be expected for the magazine company to publish a written apology if the issue is a serious one.

The main ideas of the Press Complaints Commission is to ensure the published information is accurate, keeps the privacy of the people involved (especially in cases involving children and sex cases), doesn't intrude and gives the reader an oppurtunity to reply. With some cases, it could be argued that the article is intruding in peoples personal life however it can be argued that the article is in the public interest sector, for example, John Terry having an affair was deemed in the public interest sector because he is considered a role model in society.

Film Regulatory Bodies BBFC

BBFC (British Board of Film Classification)
http://www.bbfc.co.uk/

The BBFC is a highly experienced, independant, self financing regulator of the moving image and a service provider for new and developing media. The BBFC classify films and help protect vulnerable viewers from unsuitable content which provides media industries with the security and confidence of publicly trusted regulations and protect providers of moving image from breaches of the UK law. The BBFC assist the Trading Standards to enforce the law. The BBFC, in the next five years aim to continue to regulate moving images and respond to changing social attitudes.

I have found a student BBFC (SBBFC) which I have used to help reseacrh the BBFC http://www.sbbfc.co.uk/thestudentguide and a student guide of films http://www.sbbfc.co.uk/Assets/documents/sbbfc_online_new.pdf

The Boards Five Principals
• Precedent - every decision is taken in the light of a previous case, thereby ensuring
consistency
• Balancing context against detail, with due weight given to the intention of the work as well
as the actual images shown
• Current published Guidelines covering what is acceptable in each classification category
from ‘U’ through to ‘R18’
• Arguments made in mitigation for specific issues, if overall the work is thought to offer
positive messages to a younger audience
• The work’s target audience - who is likely to want to watch this film, and to whom does it
‘speak’

Classification
For my target audience for my film I would aim to be classified at "15" because it enables teenagers to watch my film and constricts young children to watch it as they may find it scary.

"15" classification
http://www.bbfc.co.uk/classification/guidelines/15-2

The 15 classification measns that nobody younger than 15 years old is able to watch, purchase or rent materials which are classified as a "15". It must not dispay any discriminatory language or behaviour. Drugs can be shown, but must not promote drugs misuse. Horror can be element of the film as long as it is not sadistic or sexualised. If there is violence in the film, it is allowed to be strong but is not allowed to be sadistic or sexualised. Nudity, in relation to the film, must only be sexually related but due to the genre and plot of the film, this is irrelevant.

How this affects my film?
My film will not contain any discriminatory language although their will be swearing which is permitted as long as it is not too offensive which it will not be. There will be no drugs use so that is irrelevant to my film. In my film, their s scope for horror which may be present in the attack but it will not be sadistic or sexualised so the film is able to be classified as a "15". The violence in the film may be strong according to the classification however, due to the small scale of the film, it is very unlikely that I will create an in depth attack scene that the audience will see - I may allow the audience to have a glimpse of the attack or, alternatively, I could just have the sound effects of the film to create supsense and not allow the audience to see the attack scene.

The Descent - Uses and gratification

The Descent

Image: http://media.photobucket.com/image/the%20descent%20film%20poster/ptnik/movies/the-descent-movie-poster-small.jpg

Uses and gratification:

The reasoning behind people watching The Descent would primarily for entertainment:

- To escape

- For relaxation

- To fill time

- To be scared

Also for diversion to escape from everyday problems and routine.

Another reason people would watch The Descent is for intergration and social interaction. Mainly for finding a basis for conversation and social interaction enabling connection with family, friends and society.

How I am going to achieve this

I will be making a horror/ suspense film aimed at teenagers and young - middle age adults so they are able to divert from eveyday life and to be entertained. My film will offer relaxion to people who enjoy watching horror/ suspense films and divert their attention from everyday life and their problems by filling their time. I will aim to make the audience slightly scared through the suspense created within my storyline to make them intergate with society by talking about my film.

Film Script

I have changed my film script from the original because I had written in a "crime scene" without explaining what the crime scene actually was so the actors would not know what they were meant to be seeing and acting upon. I have also made slight amendments from my film treatment because it is bit childish to be talking about ghost stories so I have included ghost stories further into the film and have started with phatic conversations to make it more realistic to everyday life.

I have decided that when filming, I will get the actors to improvise the opening scene where they are drunk as I believe that is hard to write a script showing drunken behaviour. When doing filming, I will advise my actors/ actresses to roughly follow the story line but not worry about using the exact wording as I do not want the scene to seem too rehearsed as it may loose its authenticity.

Characterisation

I have decided to enlarge on what the characters in my film will be like. By doing this, the actors and actresses I will be using will have a greater understanding of how to casrry out their role and when making the script I will be influenced on what to write by how the charcters are.

Matthew Branimir (M)
Matthew is the main character who is the ring leader of the teenage group. He knows the reasons behind the crime scene and has some attachment to it that the other characters are unaware of. He tries persuading the other characters not to say any thing to anyone.

Heidi Silverrain (F)
Heidi is a normal teenager who is enjopying a carefree life. Upon discovering the attack, she is unsure what to do as she becomes worried about any repercussions from the gang involved.

Jason Garvil (M)
Jason is a similar charcater to Heidi and they often spend a lot of time together. Jason is also unsure on what to do about the discovery of the attack but doesnt seem to force any opinions.

Felix Blakely (F)
Felix Blakey is very much the "baby" of the group and seems to be concerned about everything and always wants to do good by people. She is very concerned about the attack and is adament that the group should go to the police

Film poster analysis using theorists - The Descent

I have chosen to use The Descent for the film poster anaylsis task because it is a similar genre to the film I intend to create.

Image: http://media.photobucket.com/image/the%20descent%20film%20poster/ptnik/movies/the-descent-movie-poster-small.jpg

Summary of the film:
The film is directed and written by Neil Marshall and was released in the UK in July 2005, rated 18. The genre of the film is Drama, Thriller and Horror.

The film is about a family who go on holiday, have a tragic car accident in which the main characters husband and daughter dies, leaving her the only remaining family member. Later, the main character Sarah goes on a exploration holiday of caves in the mountains with a group of friend. Whilst exploring they get trapped in cave, encounter monsterous creatures and have to fight for survival.

Saussure’s Signs:
Saussure looks at the signs and the signified - what is actually shown in the product and the representation of what is being shown.

In the poster for the The Descent a very significant sign is the female in the poster this is because the image depicts that she is in danger thus creating suspense for the film. The cuts on the females face show danger and show her as a victim and suggests struggle .
The smoke/ light rays in the image show faces in the light which is a sign. This signifies an element of danger and could suggest that the female is being watched. The light also signifies that the female may be trapped suggesting that she is a passive, victimised character in the film. The light may also signify that the light offers and escape route but due to the positioning of the woman at the bottom of the page, she is unable to escape.

Barthes Myths – the cultural connotations of the signs
Barthes myths say that the culture in which the product is placed and the meanings it has, are based upon the cultural beliefs of that region.

The light shown in the poster could have a religious angle. The source of the light could be from God. This can have two alternate meanings. Firstly, God is shining the light on the character to offer support and strength which would help the woman escape. Alternatively, the light could suggest Judgement Day in which the woman is a victim of bad fate as she is looking up to the light suggesting God has power over her, showing her as a passive character. Also, the faces in the light look similar to a religious statue which supports the idea of the religious aspect in this poster.

Levi- Strauss Binary Opposites
Levi Strauss looks at narrative structure in terms of binary opposites. This means that opposites such as the known and unkown are used to set the structure of media texts.

In my opinion, binary opposites cannot be seen in the poster for The Descent as the poster creates questions in the audiences head by creating suspense due to the mise en scene of the poster. The poster suggests an enigma so by revealing the structure of the film to the audience. This would dampen the hype for the film which would decrease the viewing, therefore decreasing the revenue.

A2 Skills Developement

As a starter (preliminary task) to get us used to filming and using the editing software avaliable in the college's computers we started a task in which we were in small groups to produce video consisting of two scenes inside the college.

The group members are:
Myself
Nathan Greenaway
Likwha

The aim of this task was to use the camera to film in sections and edit the video using the Apple Macs to come up a final piece.

From this task we got an introduction to filming and how to use iMovie. Unfortunately, due to teacher absence we were unable to finish this task.

Synopsis

A group of teenagers are enjoying a social evening and walk through the woods on their way home. During this walk home, they discover a teenage girl being attacked by a notorious gang and flee the scene, later that evening they are huddled, still shocked from the findings, and discuss their options on what they should do. The teenagers later get found by the police and get taken to the police station for questioning… But does justice get done?

Main characters

She is very concerned about the attack and is adament that the group should go to the police.

Police voice (optional)
I may use a voice of a police officer without an actor being in the shot to avoid using too many actors which may be unreliable. I have listed the police voice as optional because I may leave the questions asked to the audiences imagination by getting the actors to reveal parts of the questions in their answers to the interview/ interrgoation.

Setting
Woodland area for crime scene
Small room for the interviews
Small room for the police/prison cell

Assignment brief
A2 G324: Advanced Portfolio in Media
A short film in its entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action or animated or a combination of both.

Proposal
I propose to create an enigma in my film by creating suspense. A group of actors will be running through dark woodland area, screaming and shouting and looking behind them. They have just seen a crime scene which the character Matthew Branimir is connected with. The other characters are unaware of the connection between the crime and Matthew. Later, when the group has come out of the woods and are at home, still together, Matthew tries persuading the group not to tell anyone about what they have just seen. The scene ends up a heated debate and the outcome is unknown to the audience, it just simply ends in silence. I will not show the crime scene but expose some of the details from the interview without giving to much detail. Felix Blakely who pleaded to tell the police when having the discussion gets put on trial and awaits a court hearing in connection with the crime. The closing scene will be Felix Blakely being put into a police cell and banging and sobbing at the door.

About a girl by Brian Percival -- Film Review

I have watched the short film "About a Girl" By Brian Percival and have analysed how the film was made using mise en scene to show how the representations have been conveyed.

Link to the film: http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/films/p0055x2k

Notes:
- Non linear
- Enigma
- Character
- 1st person narration
- Juxta positioning
- Mise en scene
- Language
- Colour

Representation
- Disability
- Age
- Gender
- Sexual orientation
- Religion
- Race – stereotype - shameless
- Socioeconomic ( class )

Review
About a girl is a short film representing a young girl aged 13 whose morals have been damaged by her family life.

The main representations of this film are age, gender, race and socioeconomic, they are portrayed through mise en scene.

THE SETTING
The setting is important in conveying the story as the girl was on her own walking through the streets of Manchester. This focuses directly on her and connotes that her parents aren't particularly worried about her as you would not normally expect to se a young girl walking on her own through a rough looking area. This helps convey the subject matter as she is talking about her family life which seems fairly negative.

By contrast, in some of the scenes (like the opening scene), the young girl is seen with her friends singing lyrics from songs and seemingly enjoying her life which portrays her childlike nature and subsequently suggests a sense of innocence. These scenes make the ending of the film (where she throws her baby into the river whilst saying she has "become good at hiding things" even more shocking.

THE PROPS
The cola and crisps are used as props in the short film to express the difference between the lifestyles the girl is witnessing. Her life with her father is presented as fun and optimistic yet when it is shown in the film it is very much contrasted.

COSTUME
The girl is wearing plain clothing which highlights the socioeconomics of the film. Furthermore, the plain clothing may be representative of how she seems to go unnoticed in her family life, this is because if you were to see the girl in "real life", the clothing she is wearing does not make her stand out from the crowd and she is very likely to go unnoticed.

MAKE UP/ HAIR
The girl doesn’t seem to be wearing any makeup and her hair is swept up in a ponytail which highlights her childhood. The lack of makeup and the hair style, also help represent the socioeconomics of the film.

THE EXPRESSION AND MOVEMENT OF THE ACTORS
The film is enhanced by the movement of the girl through because you are able to get a good view of Liverpool and the surrounding areas which add to the atmosphere of the short film.

LIGHTING
The lighting is a very important influence to the film as it becomes darker when the girl drops the baby into the river. As she walks away, the lighting becomes lighter which echoes the burden being lifted off of her shoulders that her parents are unaware of her pregnancy and the baby. However, she will have the burden of her conscience of dropping her baby into the river.

STRUCTURE/ SEQUENCE
The film is in a linear sequence which is important for the structure of the film because the audience are able to understand the events of girls life before the film is set and can understand the events of the plot during what is shown in the film.

Analysis of short films

I have watched short films from Cinema 16 to get an idea of the content and how short films are made. These films do not necessarily have the same genre as the film I intend to make but it will give me greater experience in short films which will help build and develop ideas for my own film.

Cinema 16:

Joyride by Jim Gillespie (1995)
The director of this film, Jim Gillespie went on to make the film "I know what you didlast summer".

Content: An electrician leaves a job which he hasn't worked on and plans to go home. On his way he stops because there is an animal in the road and he gets hit over the head with an axe and gets kidnapped and is put in the boot of the car. Police pull the car over and the man in the boot starts banging and shouting to inform them of his presence but before the police can rescue him, the kidnapper murders the police then drives off. Later, the kinapper crashes the car and the kidnapped man manages to get out who is covered in petrol/ oil, the location at this point is back to the beginning where he'd left the job unfinished. The kidnapped man is standing with the police and a spark comes down from the powerplant and he is set alight and dies.

How it is made:
The main focus of the short film is the driving which uses a pan shot. Based upon my ideas for my film, I do not believe that I am going to use any features from this film in my own creation.

Where's the money Ronnie! by Shane Meadows
Content:
This film is about a group of men who have been involved in a crime and steal money. Following the offense, the men get questioned by the police. In this scene, the police men cannot be seen and the film has been edited so that the men narrate the story based on the information that they give to the police. This is a feature that I really like and would want to recreate a similar interview style in my own film.

I have also looked at:
Epilog by Tom Tykwer (1992)
Epilog has a slight surreal feel to the film as it is a flashback to the events that have happened and then give the actual events of what happened. I like how this is done and I may be able to use this style for my own film. I could use this idea combined with the interview scene to give a greater insight into the plot.

Eight by Stephen Daldry (1998)
This is a film set in Liverpool. The story is about a young boy who is dealing with the death of his father and coping through football. With the ideas that I have had for my film, I do not believe I can take anything from this film as an influence.

Next I have used Youtube to find short films with a similar genre to the film which I will be making to get an idea of the conventions used for a thriller film. I intentionally researched films of a similiar length to the one I will be making.

Prank Call
(Duration 5:54)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0ooByDtAwM

Content:
Prank Call is about a man who has got his victim tied up, he unties her and circles her. He hands her a phone and tells her to call somebody close who cares about her to prank call. He takes photos and laughs and walks around her, he then tells her to leave and she picks up a gun then shoots him.

How it has been made:
Opening sequence: Dialogue with the sound of phone keypad tones to match the content/title. Music plays and the camera pans around the room followed by a closeup of the victims hands which are tied up. There are many close ups of the victims face and the man which forces the audience where to look for effect. The colour of the scene is dark and the girl is in a lighter area which emphasises her. The closing sequence compliments the opening by displaying a similar dialogue for the definiton of a serial killer.

Bon Voyage!
(Duration 4:38)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_Nk1qkr_4M

Content:
Bon Voyage! is a film which follows a teenage male who is hallucinating after taking some magic mushrooms. We see the hallucinations he is having. He is frantically moving around the house to avoid the character which is following him, he picks up a shotgun but turns around and the character has gone. We understand the situation of the male when he passes a television which is showing the news and reveals the story about the magic mushrooms and the hallucinations.

How it has been made:
Opening: Bon Voyage! begins with the name of a production company and a close up of the males car.
Camera: There are many close up camera angles as the male leaves his car, enters his house and puts his keys down. Many of the shots are medium/ close ups.
Music:
Colouring: very dark, black/white contract
Closing sequence: ends with the credits.

Slapen
(Duration 5:50 mins)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLw0Aew1NAI&feature=related

Content:
In Slapen, a woman is on the floor who is quite frantic, she is laying over a dead body and is crying and trying to cover her wounds. The daughter comes in and the mum speaks to her in a foreign language then takes her out of the room and her teddy gets droped on the floor. The daughter picks up the teddy and cradles over the dead body and reaches for something beneath the sheet covering the dead body and gets injured. The mum then comes in and cradles her daughter and begins crying, a neighbour comes over to offer comfort and then sees the deas body behind the mum, he looks shocked when he realises that it is a dead body and the mum picks up a large rock and the scene goes blank which suggests that she strikes him with the rock and kills him.

How it has been made:
Opening: Mist over the moon which shows the title of the film, then goes straight into the action.
Camera shots: Low shots and close up.
Music: low tone, violin strings
Colours: The colour are very dark, contrast between black and white.
Closing shots: The shot goes black and after a few seconds the cast listing appears.

What I have learnt from this task?
This tasl has been very beneficical to my research because it is good to see many other short films to get an idea of features and conventions that have been used and to see if there are any that I can use. Also, by looking at a range of films, I am able to see aspects that I do not want in my own film which will help elliminate ideas. From this, I have liked the interview in "Where's the money Ronnie!" which has given me good ideas for my own film which I am likely to adapt to my own film.

What I will be doing in my coursework and idea generating

For this piece of coursework the options are:
- To create a short film (lasting approximately 5 minutes)
- An extract from a documentary

I have decided to make a film because I believe their is more to work with in a film and wouls get the better marks.

To decide what film I want to make, I looked at Youtube and Google and have created a brainstorm of the genres in which I can use.

From this list of genres I have eliminated any genres which I am not particularly interested in because I feel that I will enjoy and get better milage out of a genre which I enjoy. One of my favourite films is "One Missed Call" which is a horror film, the reason I enjoy it so much is because of having to think about whats going on on-screen and try and work it out as the film is progressing then come to a conclusion at the end. A horror/ suspense film will enable me to create a similar connection between the audience and the film as they are intruiged like I was inOne Missed Call. A horror/ suspense film is more preferable than a romantic comedy because I believe I can create a greater audience/film relationship and be able to make a better film in the horror/suspense genre.

I have used Google to help my research to come up with ideas:

http://www.kristofcreative.com/learning/production/film/36-dramatic-situations.shtml

Next, I have brainstormed some ideas for the genres I have selected. These are:

- Horror

- Thriller

- Suspense

This is my main idea:
Introduction:
Screaming, shouting, crying and running through woodland looking behind.

Middle:
Police interrogation

Ending:
Person being put into a cell (mental health?) and sobbing at the door.

Letter to the first year students

What do you know now, that you wished you knew about media coursework in the first year?

Dear first years,

Make sure that you keep all of the hand-outs and make sure they are adequately filled out because at a later date you will need to write about them in your blog and hand them in with your final piece of coursework. Also, regularly update your blog, keep adding new posts so you can do various different posts at the same time and go back to any you need to add to or edit.

Screenshot at every stage of your coursework and put them in a word document (add a brief summary underneath so when it comes to adding them to your blog you remember what you’ve done), you may not need all of the screenshots but at least you have evidence of your work and have a selection for what goes into your blog (it will get you more marks, the more detail you have the better!)

Good luck!! :)
